What I like to do. . .
Krav Maga (“krahv mahGAH”)
I finally found my sport when I started Krav Maga. It is designed to be practical and intuitive for people of any age, shape, or size. It consists of a wide range of combinations and techniques sourced from aikido, boxing, kick boxing, and wresting, along with reality-based training. Krav understands the best way to win a fight is NOT to get into a fight. So we spend a lot of time figuring out how to de-escalate situations and avoid conflict.
Through my practice I have found more personal confidence both physically and mentally. I am more aware of my surroundings, walk with purpose and incorporate safety practices. Most importantly, Krav Maga has taught me I can and will fight for my life if the worst case scenario were to ever happen. (I am not pictured.)
American sign language (ASL)
I am in the IB (International Baccalaureate) Program, this means that learning a language is required. The language I chose to go in depth with was American Sign Language.
I chose to commit time to this language because I find it very interesting and have always been passionate about learning it, even from a young age. I have spent approximately 30 hours learning American Sign Language (ASL), thus far. By the end of my senior year of high school I will have completed 50 hours or more. It is a complete, natural language that has the same linguistic properties as spoken languages, with grammar that differs from English. ASL is expressed by movements of the hands and face. It is the primary language of many North Americans who are deaf and hard of hearing, and is used by many hearing people as well.
My Jeep Cherokee xJ (2000)
With my dad's help, I have been able to do multiple fixes to the jeep and design modifications. With his help, I have, also, learned about maintaining a vehicle. It sometimes seems like my home away from home. This vehicle gets me to wherever I need to go. It is one of the things that makes me feel most like myself. I enjoy the responsibility and, most of all, the freedom.
cookie
Cookie is my 10 year old, 9 pound, Toy Labradoodle, which means she a retriever at heart. She will gladly go after: golf balls from 50 yards, soccer balls, ping pong balls, squeaky toys, tennis balls and the occasional stuffed animal. She leaps, runs, crawls, and burrows to get the object she desires and then she brings it right to your hand. Then, she drops it and waits for you to throw the toy again. She will even play catch. When you are nervous or sad, she is the best comfort animal. She intuitively knows when you need her the most. She is calm as can be, until a rabbit enters her sight. Even then, it is all a game. She loves to go on walks and be the center of attention. She is the best dog I could have ever asked for. I love my Cookie aka Cookie Dog aka Fluffer Butt.
